WATCH: Our exclusive video interview with Melissa Auf der Maur
Though she's best known for slinging the bass guitar in Hole and Smashing Pumpkins, Melissa Auf der Maur has had no time to lend her considerable four-string skills to another band. She's been too busy working on Out of Our Minds, a mind-boggling multi-media project involving music, film, and a graphic novel.
The recently-released album of the same name, OOOM is a haunting, fascinating and seriously rocking piece of work, a dark but ultimately uplifting tale of time travel, the healing powers of the heart, and (yes!) vikings. Check out Auf der Maur's intense Shock Session above for live versions of two songs from the album — the title track and "22 Below" — along with two cuts from her self-titled 2004 solo debut. And then watch our exclusive interview with her, in which she explains the concept behind the creation of OOOM, the influence of dreams on her musical career, and the innately nurturing aspects of the bass guitar.
