WATCH: Close Your Eyes — "Song for the Broken"
In a world overloaded by bands, MP3s and YouTube clips, it can be hard to get people's attention. Which is why, when Abilene, Texas melodic hardcore band Close Your Eyes finally got the opportunity to make their first video — for "Song For the Broken," the lead single from We Will Overcome, their Victory Records-released debut — they didn't want to leave anything in the tank.
"Our goal was just to put as much energy and passion into the video as possible," says Close Your Eyes guitarist/vocalist Brett Calloway of the "Song for the Broken" clip. "As a band, we desire to put everything we have into everything we do. We could barely walk the next day after the video shoot," he laughs.
"CYE has an amazing stage presence in their live shows. I wanted to combine their big energy with cinematography that matches the song," explains Dan Dobi, who directed the video. "I think a video like this will definitely get viewers to say 'Wow, these guys are awesome. I need to see them live!'"
The song itself is a special one for the band, which has been together in its current formation — Shane Raymond (Vocals), Brett Callaway (Guitar/Vocals), Andrew Rodriguez (Guitar), Sonny Vega (Bass), and David Fidler (Drums) — for a little over two years.
“It took me a long time to find my ‘voice’ and the things I really wanted to write about," says Raymond. "Right around when we wrote ‘Song for the Broken’ I discovered that I could use lyrics to really express what’s in my heart.”
Compassion for the needy and "broken" individuals among us constitute a significant part of the band's lyrical outlook. “It doesn’t take a specific religion to see that a lot of people in America are hurting," says Raymond who, like the rest of the band, is of the Christian faith. "I really started having a heart for these people and saying, especially from a Christian standpoint, that we are being selfish.”
And in the continuing spirit of generosity, Close Your Eyes asked ShockHound to share the "Song for the Broken" video with you in a special world premiere. Just click the play button above, and be the first on your block to get an eyeful of CYE's debut video.
