About Operation Ivy

US ska/punk cultish legends Operation Ivy were formed in 1987 by Tim Armstrong (b. 25 November 1966, Oakland, California, USA; guitar/vocals), Matt Freeman aka Matt McCall (bass), Dave Mello (drums) and Jesse Michaels (vocals). Inspired equally by Britain's first wave of punk bands and the 2-Tone ska revivalists such as the Specials, they blended these two musics into a frenetic live show. Their main American influence was the Uptones, from Berkeley, California. Their debut in Mello's garage was followed quickly by an appearance supporting MDC at Berkeley's Gilman Street club, the prominent local facility that would later breed peers such as Green Day. After making their vinyl debut on a Maximum Rock 'n' Roll compilation, Operation Ivy released the Hectic EP in January 1988 on Lookout Records. A full-length album, Energy, followed in 1989. It added to Operation Ivy's growing popularity, with the band competently matching reggae, ska, pop and punk with vitriolic lyrics. However, it was live that they were at their most impressive, performing a punishing schedule of concerts throughout North America. However, the pressure finally eroded the group's spirit, and they collapsed in May 1989. Michaels became a Buddhist monk and Mello joined Schlong, but Armstrong and Freeman continued working together. Two ska-inspired bands, the Dance Hall Crashers and Downfall, featured both of them. By April 1990 Freeman had joined MDC, touring with them while Armstrong roadied; Freeman featured on that year's album, Hey Cop, If I Had A Face Like Yours. He left by the end of the year, however, and Rancid was eventually formed, initially as a trio with Freeman, Armstrong and Reed (ex-Smog). Rancid then set about building a commercial profile that finally matched Operation Ivy's critical standing. DISCOGRAPHY: Energy (Lookout 1989)***. One of the most important albums to come out, this album is a collection of operation ivy’s amazing short lived but well lived career, Operation ivy has impact on so many bands and is often overlooked by the modern punk scene. There isn’t a bad song, mediocre, above average or B+ song on this collection. In my opinion this CD starts on fire and ends that way. Your not going to find a better anthem than “knowledge” this track will forever live on whether being played, covered or quoted. “All I know is that I don’t know nothing” is a line that is just perfectly put that I believe everyone can relate to. Sound system comes in and just has a jive to it that really rocks and puts a smile on your face. The album continues with the perfect blend of angst and groove. I’ll be blatantly honest that the first OP IVY song i heard was a cover of “the crowd”. An amazing band called PROTAGONIST played it in an abandoned church basement at a show with about 6 kids. The Crowd is possibly one of my favorite songs, The guitar work is simple but at the same time genius! The intensity of that song still gives me chills from time to time. You can’t review without mentioning the song UNITY. This is another one with intensity beyond what most bands in that time could even think of. Its passionate its personal ITS PERFECT! OP IVY later rocks out the old song walk all over you, and they cover it great its about a minute and it somewhat pisses you off because you wish it was longer, in some ways that song symbolizes the short lived career of these SKACORE rockers. Caution and room without a window are 2 more amazing tracks n this perfect album. The last track i wanna mention is BAD TOWN. This track rocks out the sax and its just great. The worst part about the song is that Hollywood Undead covered it, but how can you blame anyone for enjoying this song let alone this band. The production of this album is perfect as well, its gross crunchy guitar tone, the bass has the treble cranked, the drums are punchy and the vocals are clear. I think if you dig RANCID this is a must to check out, this album has a giant influence on rancid both vocally and musically. OP IVY is where it is at!
