Instigated in 2001, N*E*R*D started out as a rap/rock side project of superstar hip-hop writer/producers, Chad Hugo (b. Charles Hugo, 24 February 1974, Portsmouth, Virginia, USA) and Pharrell Williams (b. 5 April 1973, Virginia Beach, Virginia, USA). As the Neptunes, Hugo and Williams are known as one of the most prolific production/songwriting teams of the early twenty-first century, affording them the opportunity to work on their own album project. Adopting the moniker N*E*R*D (No-one Ever Really Dies), they recorded In Search Of ". with vocalist Sheldon 'Shae' Haley. The album was released overseas before the duo elected to re-record the songs with a live band (Minneapolis' Spymob), putting the US release back by several months. 2004"s new N*E*R*D album, Fly Or Die, was another successful stab at a rap/rock crossover. This time around the trio played the majority of the instruments themselves.
