Just when you think you’ve got Jay Reatard figured out, he goes off and records an album like WATCH ME FALL. Although Reatard made a name for himself as one of garage punk’s brightest stars via his work in bands like the Reatards and Lost Sounds, with WATCH ME FALL the energetic frontman proves that he can tackle power-pop equally as adeptly as garage. If it initially lacks some of the visceral impact of Reatard’s 2006 solo debut BLOOD VISIONS, songs like “Man Of Steel” illustrate how much of Reatard’s own voice he is able to inject into a seemingly clichéd pop template. Maybe even more impressive is the fact that mid-tempo tracks like “My Reality” display a vulnerability Reatard has shied away from in the past. That said, WATCH ME FALL can’t be categorized easy listening — “It Ain’t Gonna Save Me,” the album's opener, is an upbeat, Nuggets-worthy rumination about bad luck, and is probably the most satisfying two minutes of power-pop you’ll hear all year. — Jonah Bayer

Jay is THEE bees knees! Great voice, tight poppy tunes, awesome recording ethic. I have not heard is new one yet but is older albums are what pop and rock should be about. Goin' to get the new one as soon as I get the scratch. ~marvin lee
