About Jay Reatard

Memphis punk prodigy Jay Reatard formed his band the Reatards at the tender of age of 15 and quickly became a legend in his home town. He went on to form the synth punk band Lost Sounds a few years later and indulged his interest in lo-tech mayhem even further with Terror Visions. However, it was with his 2006 solo masterpiece, BLOOD VISIONS, that Reatard made his name. The album was a brisk, tightly wound explosion of punk, pop, noise, and new wave that marked the unhinged rocker as an expert songwriter, musician, and producer. Reatard continues to play in a variety of side projects and releases music at a shocking clip.

Just when you think you’ve got Jay Reatard figured out, he goes off and records an album like WATCH ME FALL. Although Reatard made a name for himself as one of garage punk’s brightest stars via his work in bands like the Reatards and Lost Sounds, with WATCH ME FALL the energetic frontman proves that he can tackle power-pop equally as adeptly as garage. If it initially lacks some of the visceral impact of Reatard’s 2006 solo debut BLOOD VISIONS, songs like “Man Of Steel” illustrate how much of Reatard’s own voice he is able to inject into a seemingly clichéd pop template. Maybe even more impressive is the fact that mid-tempo tracks like “My Reality” display a vulnerability Reatard has shied away from in the past. That said, WATCH ME FALL can’t be categorized easy listening — “It Ain’t Gonna Save Me,” the album's opener, is an upbeat, Nuggets-worthy rumination about bad luck, and is probably the most satisfying two minutes of power-pop you’ll hear all year. — Jonah Bayer
