What does Fratellis frontman Jon Lawler do in his downtime? He vacations with Codeine Velvet Club, a band that's far, far away from the bloke-rock of his namesake act. Together with vintage-style songbird Lou Hickey, the duo has crafted a self-titled debut album that is a nostalgic ode to '50s rock, '60s boy/girl pop duets, swingin’ jazz, and Hollywood noir. Dramatic strings intro the first track “Hollywood.” Brass bellows in the background — and when Hickey’s backing vocals chime in, you immediately imagine her sporting a beehive hairdo, a wiggle dress and opera gloves. The majority of the album continues in the same vein; big band flares, Hickey and Lawler’s '60s pop vocal interplay, and twanging guitars with a few surprises such as the Jack White-esque blues rock of “Little Sister,” the tango-touched “Like A Full Moon,” and the beautifully woozy, ascending duet “Nevada.” With all of its postwar charm and early rock n' roll attitude, Codeine Velvet Club’s debut album is delightful music time machine, without all the DeLorean trouble. — Courtney Lear
