The new holy trinity of Josh Homme, Dave Grohl and John Paul Jones have made a masterpiece together. Psychedelic in all the right ways, Them Crooked Vultures' self-titled debut finds Homme's acid-drenched riffs curling around Grohl's propulsive, polyrhythmic backbeats and Jones' "wall of bass" grooves, and it's a three-way marriage made in music heaven. "Spinning in Daffodils," "Warsaw or the First Breath You Take After You Give Up" and "Elephants" all reach (or surpass) the seven-minute mark, and every riff, movement and feeling builds a beautiful head trip. But for all of the trio's considerable musical prowess, Homme's lyrical sensibility may be the sharpest knife in the Vultures' arsenal. Sarcastic, poetic, tongue-in-cheek and vibrant, his words on cuts like "Interlude with Ludes" bite while they soothe: "I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I am," he intones with a smirk that only some dude jamming with a member of Led Zeppelin could properly brandish. The standout track, however, may be "Bandoliers," six minutes of airy, sparse guitars that could be the soundtrack to a modern Spaghetti Western. After a massive chorus, Homme croons, "This is goodbye," and it becomes a full-on lover's lament for the chemically imbalanced. Though the era of fans actually lining up to buy their favorite artist's new album on the day of its release is long gone, the release of THEM CROOKED VULTURES is truly an event that would have been worth camping out all night for. — Rick Florino
