You can practically mark your calendar by it: Every four years, the Orange Peels emerge from semi-seclusion with another glorious platter of bittersweet indie-pop. 2020, the Northern California band's latest release, picks up where 2005's CIRCLING THE SUN left off — only with beefier guitars and shinier keyboards that show some '70s AM radio influences creeping into the Peels' "If '60s was '90s" arsenal. Otherwise, leader Allen Clapp's gift for composing heartfelt and melodic paeans to the miracles of love and existence remains gratifyingly intact, as evidenced by such instantly infectious gems as "We're Gonna Make It," "Shining Like Stars" and "Jane Lane." While comparisons to everyone from the Zombies ("Emily Has Told Me Why") to Death Cab For Cutie ("The Great Outdoors") are certainly applicable, at this point the Orange Peels pretty much sound like nobody but themselves. And while the urgency of 2020's hard-charging title track ("Time is short/But time is now") is somewhat amusing in light of Clapp's slow-and-steady craftsmanship, the album is more than worth the wait — and should give you plenty of indie-pop goodness to savor until 2013 rolls around. — Dan Epstein
