Featured Editorial Review
BLUE RECORD is the impressive follow-up to 2007’s critically acclaimed RED ALBUM, which shows Baroness once again using dashes of prog rock and large doses of melody to transport their brand of Southern sludge to new levels of brilliance. They still have the cranky disposition of a crust punk raging against the machine’s status quo, yet are simultaneously as hospitable as a mountaintop hillbilly with a jug of moonshine. While BLUE RECORD does find the band moving forward in terms of tempo (the acoustic “Steel That Sleeps the Eye") and structure — it often feels as if the record is one seamless song — they’ve not left their roots behind. As evidence to that end, I offer you the pummeling drums of “The Sweetest Curse,” the terse punk bass lines of “Jake Leg,” the post-rock flair of “Swollen and Halo,” and the dueling harmonic guitars of “A Horse Called Golgatha.” With BLUE RECORD, Baroness have done the unthinkable: they’ve trumped their previous stunning release with an epic masterpiece. – Greg Barbera

Red Album, I mean, come on. That thing was just a trip of musical glory. But when Baroness came out with Blue Record, people didn't think they could match up. Well, guess what? They did, if not...dare I say...do better! The music is definitely everything you expect Baroness to write and more, because they even have a few different feels. Especially the dancey feel from "O'er Hell and Hide" and the rad old surf guitar sounds on "Jake Leg". If you loved Red Album, Then you absolutely need to have Blue Record in your music collection or else you'll just feel empty in life.
