In 1987, D.R.I. – with tongue firmly planted to cheek — released “Crossover” signaling the beginning of an era where hardcore would openly embrace metal, and suddenly a new genre was born. Today, we’ve come to know this as metalcore, and this record by Darkest Hour could most definitely be defined as such. But what most metal (and hardcore) bands tend to forget is that sometimes you need a little melody in the mix; sure, you can bury it in beefy chords and swallowed-mic vocals, but it’ll still shine through and grab the listener. This is why British and Scandinavian metal tend to be more popular then the tough guy stomp rock thrash — because it’s, as they say, catchy. Darkest Hour apparently know this little secret as well. Aside from being road dogs who relentlessly tour and tirelessly promote themselves without an ounce of douchebaggery, they can — as tracks like "Devolution of the Flesh," "Death Worship" and "A Distorted Utopia" prove — still totally riff on the melody in a Scandinavian vein. Their lyrics are still scathing, the band still plays like they're really angry and Brian McTernan’s production makes sure they cross their "I"s and dot their "T"s. No complaints here, folks. – Greg Barbera

"The Eternal Return" is the return of the thrash/melodic death influenced Darkest Hour sound from their previous material. The last 2 albums seemed to focus in a more melodic direction with singalong choruses... but Darkest Hour's latest offering is just an onslaught of pure grinding metal. Highly suggested for fans of At The Gates, The Black Dahlia Murder, Slayer, etc. Choice cuts: "No God", "Death Worship", "Transcendence"

Following "Deliver Us", Darkest Hour releases a similar thrash onslaught reminiscent of "Hidden Hards of a Sadist Nation" and "Deliver Us". The CD as a whole wraps up very nicely with a good variety between songs. The drums were probably my personal favorite aspect of the album, though guitars were also top notch. The Lyrics were not quite as poetic as previous albums, but equally brutal. Great Album - definitely worth checking out. =]

Following their near perfect albums, "Undoing Ruin" and "Deliver Us", Darkest Hour did not fail to deliver with "The Eternal Return". John Henry's vocal are heavier than ever, and his lyrics are still sinister. The only drawback that keeps "The Eternal Return" from the ranks of UR or DU are in the guitars. Though they're still heavy and full of thrash, they're missing the epic feeling that the former guitarist crafted into previous albums. Overall, a brutal triumph for Darkest Hour, which once again keeps them at the top of the class.

I love this new album, just one brutal breakdown after another.

Blast beats, brutal vocals, sweat rifts, nothing better. Keep up the metal epicness.
