Strawberries, hot weather, and swimming. All things I hate about summer and since we are counting down the days until June, it is time once again for my least favorite season. Seriously, Summer...fix yo'self. You been burning my fair skin for three torturous months every year for well over 25 years. Isn't there anything better you can do? Why can't you be like Fall and make the trees look all awesome and s@#t? It just so happens San Diego's Crocodiles has their debut "Summer Of Hate" to keep me cool and keep listening to their well crafted use of post-punk influences from the late 70's and early 80's. Rowell and Welchez yoinked their name from an Echo & The Bunnymen album and rightly so with ballads, layers of fuzz thicker than what you find on that lone grape Skittle behind the futon, and some crunching industrial drum work. The cut "I Wanna Kill" is killer due to the influence of the JAMC's "Head On" . I honestly thought it was sampled upon first listen. Plus, the chorus is catchy and simple. Crocodiles merely don't wear their influences on their sleeves, but more like 2XL all over print t-shirts. There are big hints of Suicide and Kraftwerk like production values as on "Soft Skull (In My Room)". Shimmering like the moon on the lake is the guitar on "Here Comes The Sky" brings a bit of the Stone Roses to mind, too. Throughout "Summer Of Hate", Crocodiles use what they like musically so well to manufacture a fresh release. In other words, they can make that 2XL t shirt look good! WHAT THEY SAY: You may like this if you are into Crystal Stilts, Suicide, and the Jesus and Mary Chain. WHAT I SAY: Crocodiles do very well with their obvious influences and I just so happen like those influences. It is hard thing to do and they do it well. Better than anything stupid Summer could do.
