Crippled Black Phoenix lean more toward the brooding, evolving instrumental than the clamorous and guitar-heavy rock of bands like From Monument To Masses or Pelican, and when they drop down a pinch of Moroccan flavor on “444” or dial up a classic American spiritual with “A Hymn For A Lost Soul,” they broaden their horizons in all the right ways. Recorded over the course of a year at Geoff Barrow’s S.O.A. Studios, the album is incredibly textured and immersive, and reveals new passages with each listen. “Burnt Reynolds” is a powerful opening tune, and “Time Of Ye Life/Born For Nothing/Paranoid Arm Of Narcoleptic Empire,” with its Floydian intrigue, is an especially deep cut, even if its title is a bit masturbatory. It’s not easy wading through the heavy, psychedelic brume of 200 TONS OF BAD LUCK, but that’s what you get when members of Mogwai, Pantheist, Electric Wizard and Gonga are the ones making the music.
