I was in the car with my 10-year-old the first time I put this record on. He grooved on the chugging, two-finger-pluck guitar rhythm of the opening track for about 30 seconds, then asked, “Is this the guy from SHREK?” Two songs in, he confessed that he liked the music, but that the guy's voice was “super-weird.” You can’t blame a kid for not being able to get past singer Adam Thompson’s thick Scottish brogue, but he does raise a point: While the music on We Were Promised Jetpacks’ debut album dips into the more melodic end of the post-punk pool, Thompson’s voice is the most important instrument in the mix, whether soaring through octaves in the background of “Conductor” or shouting confessions in “Quiet Little Voices.” (That said, if you can’t get down with the Scottish vibe, you shouldn’t buy this record.) THESE FOUR WALLS is packed with driving riffs and big hooks — but most importantly, a big heart. You don’t just hear these tunes, you feel them in an immediate, visceral way. When Thompson’s voice finally kicks in after four minutes of instrumental crescendo on “Keeping Warm,” he sounds like he’s run a marathon of his own. And by the time you get to the end of the album, you’ll have enjoyed your own catharsis. — Richard Thomas

I totally love this! The faster tracks are my favorite, Ships With Holes Will Sink especially. His voice is wonderful! I was pretty excited to listen to it because of the name but it was well worth digging deeper than the cute band name!
