A listen through a Decemberists album is always a narrative experience, but Colin Meloy has taken his story-telling style to new heights on THE HAZARDS OF LOVE, a complete 17-part rock opera. The band’s most epic saga to date, the album tells the tale of the heroine Margaret, who is ravaged by a shape-shifting animal, her lover William, a magical forest queen, and a licentious rake. The story unfolds in a winding series of songs sung through the different characters. Margaret’s pieces are sweet, serene and innocent as translated through the pretty, piercing voice of Lavender Diamond’s Becky Stark. My Brightest Diamond’s Shara Worden masters the blustery queen with her powerful, bluesy voice on tracks like, “The Wanting Comes in Waves/Repaid.” The Rake, who may be the most captivating character on the album, shows his unapologetic evil as he viciously murders his own children in, oddly enough, one of the album’s catchiest tracks, “The Rake’s Song.” “I expect that you’d think that I should be haunted/but it never really bothers me,” Meloy stingingly sings to the rhythm of a dark, chugging guitar. Don’t worry though, his little ones actually do come back to haunt him in the form of a creepy children’s choir in “The Hazards of Love 3 (Revenge),” backed by an eerie, creaking violin for emphasis. While there are definite recurring motifs, the catchy hooks and sing-along choruses from Decemberists of old are nowhere to be found in this mystical land. Instead, the band puts pop conventions aside to craft a beautiful, unbridled sonic play. HAZARDS may not a passive listen, but you may just find yourself hanging on every word from track to track, getting lost in this hazardous tale. — Courtney Lear

Before purchasing this album two days ago, I read some bad reviews. Everyone was dissing on the "60's folk influence". Maybe I just like "60's folk", but I am so relieved that they did not deter me from purchasing it, because it is one solid album from start to finish. I love how their sound changes with every album and story that they tell. The lyrics are haunting and powerful, and the music accompanies them perfectly. It is slightly heavier than other decemberists albums of the past, but it is a great and refreshing change, and still captures the classic sound of the band. I love that they have brought in different voices along with Colin's. It gives the songs a complexity that their earlier albums lack. Everyone needs to check this album out!

It took me a min. to get used to the heaver sound coming from them, but to be quite honest this band can do anything. The story the album tells is quite spooky and The Rake's children give me chills. Great album.
