definitely my pick for album of the year 2009, despite some other amazing releases this year. the horrors have returned with 'primary colours,' brilliantly fusing multi-layered production and immensely enjoyable songwriting into a cohesive album anyone can enjoy. the intensity of "new ice age" rivals the frenzy of the cramps and sonic youth, and the swinging ocean of sound in "do you remember" reminds me of m83 and some of smashing pumpkins' most romantic punch-drunk ballads. pick this one up; you won't regret it.

Yeah...your dad is hip, you know? He still rocks the White Castle shirt, reads Rolling Stone magazine because he wants to know what those Coen Brothers are up to and asks if you've heard of certain bands that play "Late Night with David Letterman". Remember those times where you just get blind sided by your father sharing information so unexpected beyond his previous cool status it just makes you rethink him in entirely different context? Now, Fatherbudlight420 put the smack down in the beginning of holiday shopping season when all the old man wanted for Christmas that year was a version of Semisonic's "Closing Time". Easy breezy I thought to myself! Oh...wait...on cassette.... cassette single. Shouldn't be too hard. I didn't mention that this was 2003 yet, did I? What has saved and reminded me since is "Primary Colours" by The Horrors. These blokes came screaming out of Britain in 2005 with their debut "Strange House". On this their debut, The Horrors really loved The Cramps and The Birthday Party while still being even more angular. I thought this band of Roman Dirge drawn rock n' rollers who raided Russell Brand's closet where fairly swell until they didn't share any of Mr. Brands threads with me. Then out of nowhere, much like my dad's letter to Santa, they asked Old Saint Nick for a sound of DFA meets the Kinks kind of thing which came true on their second full length. The new approach and sound is more mature than the previous outing. "Primary Colours" employs three producers, one being Geoff Barrow of Portishead. Geoff's production compliments the band's new direction well on songs such as "Who Can Say" and "Scarlet Fields". Also, Tomethy Furse turned in the six string for a keyboard for this record which rounded out the focus of this album. The Horrors are still a new band and hold their favorite records close to their hearts which in turn plows through "Primary Colours". I bet there is an Interpol album with fingerprints and bent corners after listening to "I Only Think of You" and the track certainly works. Singer Faris Badwan still has a raucous '60's garage style delivery, but is less Lux Interior and leans towards a Richard Butler from the The Psychedelic Furs with this new added synth sound. "Primary Colours" is still angular and dissonant and is a better listen with The Horrors new, but still dark crush on electronics. WHAT THEY SAY: The Horrors have their origin in the early 2000s where they became interested in obscure vinyl and DJing. WHAT I SAY: The Horrors came up big time on this album with just being more exploratory with what they could do as a band. Does anybody have any old cassettes around? Father's day will be here shortly.
