Former musicians-for-hire Eric Ronick and Than Luu toured with acts like Panic at the Disco, M. Ward and Rachel Yamagata before finally releasing their own debut this year as Black Gold. Recorded between their other paying gigs, RUSH is ten tracks of captivating, accessible indie rock with catchy hooks and sweet melodies. While playing other people’s music probably wasn’t ideal, it wasn’t without its perks; their first tour was in support of Panic at the Disco in stadium-sized venues and the emo quartet’s lead singer, Brendon Urie, even sang back up vocals on Rush’s first single, “Plans and Reveries.” Their gigging with established acts shows in their performance on RUSH. They come out of the gate with a sense of grandeur on “Detroit,” a track of orchestral rock that opens with Luu’s resonating symbols and an attention-grabbing electro bass line. With Ronick singing lead and tinkling the keys and Luu handling the drums and backing vocals, the duo craft radio-ready singles like the building progression and soaring chorus of “Shine,” the U2-esque arena rock of “Run,” and the bouncy hook of “Idols.” “Everybody wants to touch you hand/But don’t you worry about the talk behind your back/Until it’s too late.” RUSH is a definite statement from the Brooklyn pair: Black Gold is ready to storm the big stage and take over the airwaves. One down, one to go. — Courtney Lear
