Featured Editorial Review
Despite his well-deserved rep as the hardest-working man in rock n' roll, Bruce Springsteen has sounded best in recent years when he hasn't been laboring under the weight of trying to make a grand statement. (Compare, say, the breezy "Girls in Their Summer Clothes" from 2007's MAGIC to the ponderous title track of 2002's THE RISING.) One of the things that makes WORKING ON A DREAM such a delightful and engaging listen is how relaxed Bruce seems — on tracks like "This Life," "Working On A Dream," "Surprise, Surprise," "Queen of the Supermarket" and the jubilant "My Lucky Day," it sounds like he's just letting the music, the imagery and the emotions flow without saddling them with deeper meanings or weighty concepts. Even the darker songs, like "The Last Carnival" (a tribute of sorts to fallen E Street comrade Danny Federici) and Bruce's song for the Mickey Rourke film THE WRESTLER, effectively communicate their cosmic truths without ever having to hit you over the head with them. As with 1980's THE RIVER, not everything here is A-grade material (the decision to start the album with the monotonous eight-minute saga "Outlaw Pete" is certainly questionable), but the overall work is tuneful and life-affirming enough that you can't help but want to play it over and over again. — Dan Epstein
