While not a veteran of thriller films, Carter Burwell’s solid background includes sculpting scores for edgy fare like VELVET GOLDMINE, BEING JOHN MALKOVICH, NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN and, dare we add, the original BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER seem a major bonus in regards to TWILIGHT. However, it wasn’t certain whether Burwell would opt to take TWILIGHT in an unexpected direction or simply stick to the usual modus operandi of strings, strings and more strings. Luckily, his TWILIGHT score is refreshing — instead of packing the film full of sweeping minor chord orchestrals, Burwell makes use of acoustic guitars, feedback and seemingly, a Foley sound effects room. And while some of the arrangements seem de rigueur, the additional elements (including a lot of dissonant chords) that Burwell brings in give the score its unique flavor. The downside to the album is that, while some soundtracks can stand alone musically, it’s somewhat difficult to imagine these songs existing devoid of the film. However, considering that the listeners most likely buying this record are super TWILIGHT fans and not soundtrack aficionados, it might be just fine. And while said fans were initially depressed that “Bella’s Lullaby” was not performed as a song by Robert Pattinson as originally speculated (Pattinson was later redeemed by a song of his own on the film’s soundtrack), it turns out that the instrumental is hauntingly beautiful and a fitting choice. On the track, as with several others, Burwell makes use of a subtle piano through line that weaves through the album as a repeated theme, reminding the listener of the juxtaposition between the delicacy and darkness in TWILIGHT. In a strange sense, it almost seems to audibly convey the fact that the story isn’t over…which, of course, it isn’t. Overall, a well done soundtrack that should serve as a brilliant addition to any TWILIGHT fan’s collection. For those reading this who are TWILIGHT neophytes, the easiest way to describe the score would be to say that, if there were an aisle for classical goth, this album would be in it. – Tatiana Simonian

I really think that this was a great score, the music really made this movie, rather than detract from it. I have been hearing it a lot more now that the dvd is out and I love all the choices they made. I do agree that Bella's Lullaby is not that awesome. I just read in the director's notebook that Rob Pattinson's siter has a bit of vocals in the Who Are They track. I had to listen really close to hear it, but still fun!

Number 14 is not Bella's Lullaby. One because ive heard the other one, two this was introduced in twilight, she gets her actual lullaby as a gift from Edward on her birthday in New Moon.
