Everything I read about The Pains of Being Pure at Heart made me assume that they were just another band who would sparkle in the indie-rock limelight for a few months, then disappear. Wow, a band that is playing lo-fi pop over a wall of distorted guitars! Hasn’t this been done to death? Upon listening to this album, I learned that I could, despite my jaded cynicism and rockist attitude, love a Nu-Gaze band. The songs are both instantly nostalgic and remarkably fresh. The bands sound is deeply rooted in 80’s shoegaze and twee, but has a more distinguished rhythm section than I remember any band of that era utilizing. There is also a lot more energy to these songs than you would expect from a shoegaze band, and that energy might be the key to what makes this album sparkle. This album is full of wonderfully dreamy, reverb soaked noise-pop. This sounds like the sweet-dream-pop I used to put on mix-tapes in middle school, hoping I would get a chance to impress some chick with my awesome taste in music. Often times instead I would either be laying in my bedroom, dreaming of how cool it would be to live in Britain, or calling people and asking if they wanted to start a Smiths cover band. This album makes me want to try and start that cover band again. P.S. This Love is Fucking Right! may be the best song title ever.
